what do YOU want to be?
Some of us just don’t fit into a category. Some of us still don’t know how to answer the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”
At 21 years old, I ask myself this question everyday and everyday I give myself a new answer. Some days I wake up and I am set on strictly social media. I live for that fast human interaction between people. I think it is incredible that you can connect with someone on the other side of the world within seconds because you share at least one common interest. Sometimes I decide on strictly being a photographer, starting my own studio in Brooklyn and spending my days drinking tea and being a freelance photographer for some of my small favorite magazine companies. And then there are the days I just want to travel and settle on being a waitress or barista at a fun restaurant to fund my travels.
Trust me, you are not the only one out there that has many interests and can’t settle on one focus. They call us ‘creatives.’ We are the ones that make that cute coffee shop on the corner, the coffee shop you want to spend your Sunday because of the beautifully designed sign that draws you in. We are the ones that spent hours of handwork on that graffiti wall so you could take an Instagram photo that tops your likes for the weeks. We are the ones that came up with the design of your shoe that you just Instagram-ed from a birds-eye view. We are the ones that designed your favorite stores logo. We are the ones that take the photos in your favorite magazines and blow the glass your air plants hang in. We are the ones that make your days pleasant and pretty.
Creatives look at things not for what they are but for their their potential. We imagine an end result as soon as we see the beginning steps. We stay up late until we can illustrate on paper what our sleepless minds have dreamt up. We are the ones that hog the corner table in your favorite coffee shop and have every Adobe Creative Suit program running on our computer. We are the ones that create.
I have found that those who create are the most inspiring. Anytime I go to an artist talk or discover a new artist I always leave with a mind cooking up new ideas. I decided to compile a list of the virtual places a creative can go to get their wheels spinning.
Below are some of my favorite stores, blogs and forums. Enjoy!
